What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)?

Recognizing a person’s limitations is the first step in developing a care plan (or making a referral for care). This helps us to provide the appropriate type and level of assistance. ADLs - many of us have never heard of this term. The acronym ADL is very familiar with caregivers of the elderly, nursing one back to health and those with diminished physical capacity.

Long Term Care Planning

Long-term care is a variety of services and supports to meet health or personal care needs over an extended period of time. While long-term care is often associated with nursing homes, the truth is that most care is actually provided at home. Many of the programs and services that help people remain in their homes and communities are provided through the Administration for Community Living (ACL) Older Americans Act (OAA). ACL was created around the basic principle that elderly adults and people with disabilities of any age should be able to live with three basics:

  • Where they choose
  • With the people they choose
  • With the ability to participate fully in their communities.

Older Americans Act
