Outdoor gatherings are a great way to meet the neighbors

Celebrate Good Neighbors!

Fall is the time for family and friends, celebrate good neighbors, Are Your Senior Loved Ones Prepared?

It starts with saying hello. Celebrate National Neighbor Day on September 28 with your closest friends and family! Good Neighbor day was created to honor the valuable relationships between good neighbors, whether they live next door or down the street. We can used this opportunity to get connected and show appreciation for each other. During the any month of the year we benefit from being aware of who is in our area and then create strong healthy communities. Introduce Yourself. If you’re new to the area, or a new neighbor moves in, take the initiative to briefly introduce yourself to them. Be Friendly and Approachable. Practice Good Listening. Be Respectful and Considerate. Participate in Activities. Offer Assistance and Support. Be a Responsible Neighbor. It helps on many levels to connect with people in the neighborhood. Get help out when inclement weather strikes. Our elderly loved ones will need more care and attention as the Fall season turns chill and into Winter. With that in mind, here are some good neighbor tips to help keep your senior loved ones cared for and looked in on by our good neighbors.

1. Spread Positive Thoughts

Organize a sunny day art show and use chalk to write fun, encouraging messages on sidewalks. Chalk on on rocks or Paint positive messages on some rocks with friends or family. Then take a walk around the neighborhood placing your smile rocks throughout the neighborhood. Write a nice letter of encouragement or a sweet and simple message on a card for your neighbors and deliver it in person, with or without cookies.

2. Pop by Each Neighborhood Home With an Inexpensive Gift

Include a short handwritten note with your gift. The gift can be very simple. Flowers from your yard, veggies form your garden or a small potted plant for your neighbor to grow. Dropping off some baked goods will always get a smile.

3. Host a Get-Together

Outdoor movie nights are an easy neighborhood event to organize for all the neighborhood to enjoy, everybody bring their own snacks. Hang up a sheet, the library still has projectors and old time film to check out. Themed block parties are always a fun time. Potluck is a sure way to enjoy and easy gathering, seasonal BBQ or progressive meal.

4. Connect with Good Neighbors

There are many ways to build your neighborhood community year round. Partner with a neighbor when renting specific tools for landscaping projects or common household needs. Create a neighborhood tool sharing spreadsheet. Offer your collection of tools to help with clean-up efforts. Pair up with other parents to lead a Boy or Girl scouting troop, coach sports or volunteer at church functions with the neighbor. Start a monthly club to share meals, discuss books, watch movies or play games. A regularly scheduled get-together will will help promote deeper relationships. Encourage your neighbors to DIY holiday decorating for different holidays. Set a time for everyone to craft door wreaths. Then later set a date and time to walk around and view the neighborhood decor. End the night with light dessert at your home.  Organize a group gift to honor significate life events among your neighbors, ideas for a new baby or bon voyage party for those going on vacation or a returning from vacation gathering. Organize playdates for the children or the dogs in the neighborhood.

5. Create a Neighborhood Social Media Group

If you normally use a Social Media platform you can easily see if  your community has group or a page. If there is no community page you can make one very easily. This is a great way to share information or concerns of the neighborhood. Loved ones can connect regularly with their next door people or the friend down the road. Consider connecting every day, when possible to keep up with community new. Especially in seniors, paying a Social Media visits can lift our spirits and help our loved one get through with others all times of the year.

Golden Placement Services answered! It’s really difficult to have to place an aging parent into a facility, but our family knew it was time. So I did some research, called 15 facilities, and managed to get on one wait list. I also called two companies that assist with finding homes, and they said they could not help. We were concerned we wouldn’t find a place, and if we did, it could be a very poor choice for our dad. Then I was given Golden Placement Services phone number and I spoke with a lovely woman named LaVona. That’s when everything changed! LaVona listened to our family’s needs, was understanding, and within days, she had arranged places for us to visit. How she found them, I don’t know, but she did! She met us there, listened some more, answered questions, and offered sage advice. We will forever be grateful for Golden Placement Services help in making this very tough decision. We absolutely know that my dad is in the right place to spend the rest of his life. And, we wouldn’t have that assurance today, had we not been connected with their wonderful service! They have blessed us greatly and we are sharing their information with others we know who are going through the same process.
