What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)?

ADLs Activities of Daily Living DefinedRecognizing a person’s limitations is the first step in developing a care plan (or making a referral for care). This helps us to provide the appropriate type and level of assistance. ADLs – many of us have never heard of this term. The acronym ADL is very familiar with caregivers of the elderly, nursing one back to health and those with diminished physical capacity.

ADLsActivities of Daily Living (ADLs): Activities of daily living are activities related to personal care. They include bathing or showering, dressing, getting in and out of bed or a chair, walking, using the toilet, and eating. The need for help with understanding Oregon ADL (Activities of Daily Living) or  

IADLs – Inst​rumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), or self-management are apart life for 2 out of 3 Americans as we age whether due to illness or disability.  

Determining the type of ADL and IADL care that is needed also enables to evaluate if staying at home with care is an option.   • Transferring bed/chair
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Grooming
  • Eating
  • Mouth hygiene
  • Toileting
  • Walking
  • Climbing stairs

 

IADLs 

  • Doing housework
  • Doing laundry
  • Shopping
  • Cooking
  • Managing medications
  • Using the phone and looking up numbers
  • Driving a vehicle on roadways or using public transportation
  • Managing finances (Which should be handled by someone who is not a caregiver if your loved one is not capable)

 

Long Term Care Planning

Long-term care is a variety of services and supports to meet health or personal care needs over an extended period of time. While long-term care is often associated with nursing homes, the truth is that most care is actually provided at home. Many of the programs and services that help people remain in their homes and communities are provided through the Administration for Community Living (ACL) Older Americans Act (OAA). ACL was created around the basic principle that elderly adults and people with disabilities of any age should be able to live with three basics:

  1. Where they choose
  2. With the people they choose
  3. With the ability to participate fully in their communities.

Older Americans Act

When you are looking for programs provide home and community-based services through state, tribal, and local agencies in each state to individuals age 60 and over. Look to the Older Americans Act (OAA) for guidance! We can help you navigate the process of understanding and connecting to this program in your area of Oregon.  In addition, the OAA provides support to family caregivers. Services include, but are not limited to information & assistance, personal care, nutrition services, transportation, and adult day care.
